Borussia Dortmund remain optimistic about signing Edson Álvarez from Ajax, according to Florian Plettenberg.
From BVB’s point of view, the deal is not completely off the table. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl had been working on a deal to bring Álvarez to the club and negotiations had been ongoing with Ajax. Dortmund submitted a €30m offer to sign Álvarez but were unwilling to meet Ajax’s valuation of the player, with Patrick Berger adding that the player would have been too expensive for BVB in the end.
After the collapse in talks with Ajax, it was widely reported that Dortmund would focus on other transfers such as Felix Nmecha who is due for his medical this week.
Dortmund only have Emre Can and Salih Özcan as back-up in the defensive midfielder role. As of now, head coach Edin Terzic will go into the 2023/24 campaign with Can as their main defensive midfielder.
However, should the club manage to meet the financial expectations for Álvarez, the Mexican international would be a welcome signing to the midfield.
