German national team head coach Jürgen Klopp has stated that 29-year-old Besiktas goalkeeper Alexander Nübel will play between the sticks in the UEFA Nations League game against Greece on Sunday.
Marc ter Stegen started in the 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, and there were mixed reactions to his performance. Klopp defended the Ajax keeper in the pre-match press conference ahead of the game in Augsburg.
“I heard that Marc [ter Stegen] was criticized, which surprised me. I thought he was outstanding. It’s true he misplaced a couple of passes, but I’m 0.0% critical of him. I’m very happy with his performance. The change in goal tomorrow has nothing to do with Marc’s performance,” Klopp told the media.
Manuel Neuer officially retired from international football for the second and final time on June 30, 2026, following Germany’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was the main man in goal for Germany since the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Although Klopp has identified ter Stegen as his current number one, finding Germany’s long-term solution in goal remains one of the new head coach’s tasks. Giving Nübel an opportunity against Greece offers Klopp the chance to assess another of his options between the sticks..
