Union Berlin a step closer to Champions League football

Union Berlin have moved a step closer to qualifying for the Champions League after a 4-2 win against Freiburg.

Both Union and Freiburg were level points heading into today’s game but Union now hold the advantage with just two games remaining. Die Eisernen travel to Sinsheim to play Hoffenheim before hosting Werder Bremen in the final game of the season – six points is certainly a possibility. Freiburg host Wolfsburg before travelling to Frankfurt, and so have the tougher run-in of the two teams.

Union raced into a 3-0 lead against Freiburg inside 38 minutes through Kevin Behrens and a Sheraldo Becker brace, but Freiburg fought back with goals from Manuel Gulde and Vincenzo Grifo. Aïssa Laïdouni then put the game beyond doubt with Union’s fourth of the afternoon.

The fact that both teams are fighting for Champions League football is a testament to the incredible work that both Urs Fischer and Christian Streich have put in over the years. It would be fitting for both of these clubs to play Champions League football next season but RB Leipzig, who occupy fourth, play on Sunday – just three points separate the three teams.
