Mesut Özil to leave Fenerbahçe for İstanbul Başakşehir

As reported by Patrick Berger of Sport1, Mesut Özil (33) has terminated his contract with Fenerbahçe and is expected to join cross-city rivals İstanbul Başakşehir. An official announcement is expected shortly and it could come as early as today. This is after Özil joined Fenerbahçe from Arsenal in January 2021, the former Germany international played 36 games across all competitions, scoring eight and creating three.

Özil was kicked out of the Fenerbahçe in March with an alleged altercation with then head coach İsmail Kartal. Expected to join İstanbul Başakşehir, now coached by former Inter, Newcastle United and Fenerbahçe midfielder Emre Belözoğlu, a player whom Özil has a good relationship with.

Throughout his career, Özil has played in the top flight for Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Fenerbahçe. The former Germany international joined Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for €47m and would go on to play 254 games across all competitions under Wenger, Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta – scoring 44 and creating 77.
