VfB Stuttgart hope to keep Alexander Nübel for another season

Speaking to Sportstudio (via @iMiaSanMia), VfB Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth confirms the club wishes to keep goalkeeper Alexander Nübel for another season.

Nübel is currently on loan from Bayern Munich at Stuttgart and when asked about the prospect of keeping him for another year, Wohlgemuth said: “He’s one of the pillars of our team and a very, very important factor in the dressing room. Of course, we’re trying to get him to play for us next year. But there are three parties at the table. I assume that talks are already underway between Alex and Bayern. And once they’re over, I’ll come into play”

Previously, it was reported that a potential permanent stay for Nübel at Stuttgart was unlikely due to Stuttgart’s inability to finance a move as Nübel already had to forgo some of his salary to join the club on loan in the summer.

However, with the prospect of playing Champions League football next season, staying at Stuttgart for another season may appeal to the 27-year-old especially with Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich once again extending their contracts at Bayern, putting Nübel’s future at the club in doubt once again.

Nübel staying an extra year may also help Stuttgart’s plan to develop goalkeeper Dennis Seaman who is highly rated at the club and believes can be their number one eventually.

With nine games left in the Bundesliga, Stuttgart currently sit comfortably third in the league and look set to return to Champions League football for the first time in over 12 years.
