Loïs Openda backs Timo Werner to succeed at Tottenham Hotspur

With Timo Werner’s loan to Tottenham Hotspur nearing completion, RB Leipzig teammate Loïs Openda backs the German to succeed on his return to the Premier League.

“We said goodbye and wish him all the best,” said Openda. “Tottenham is a good team in England. Timo will show his quality there, for sure.”

Werner is expected to complete his move to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham on Tuesday evening with the player currently undergoing his medical check. Should the 27-year-old succeed at Spurs during his six-month loan spell, they also have the option to purchase Werner for a reported €20m, which would see Leipzig recoup the fee they paid Chelsea in 2022.

Werner has struggled in his second season at Leipzig and has only scored twice in the Bundesliga (203 minutes). A loan move away for six months will potentially help him regain his confidence in front of goal and more importantly, earn his place back in the Germany squad for the Euros in the summer.

Although a departure in an attacking area, Leipzig won’t enter the market for a Werner replacement. The arrival of Eljif Elmas from Napoli and the return of Dani Olmo from injury means that Xavi Simons can replace Werner as one of Leipzig’s striking options. Whilst they also have Openda, Yussuf Poulsen and Benjamin Seško as alternatives.
