Official | Paul Nebel signs contract extension amid Mainz 05 form crisis

Bundesliga club Mainz 05 have officially confirmed that attacking midfielder Paul Nebel has signed a contract extension. The 24-year-old’s previous agreement had been scheduled to expire in June 2027, but the Rheinhessen have now secured the services of their long-serving academy graduate beyond the current season.

Mainz announced the agreement on Friday without disclosing the duration of Nebel’s new contract. The decision represents an important commitment to a player who has spent more than a decade at the club, having originally joined Mainz’s youth academy from Kickers Offenbach in 2016.

Nebel made his professional debut in 2020 but initially struggled to establish himself in the Bundesliga. A productive two-year loan spell at Karlsruher SC between 2022 and 2024 subsequently helped accelerate his development, allowing the versatile attacker to return to his parent club as a considerably more experienced professional.

The former Germany U21 international subsequently emerged as an important figure in Mainz’s attacking setup, contributing significantly to the club’s impressive 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign and earning a senior Germany call-up in September 2025.

His development has nevertheless been far from straightforward.

Nebel commits to Mainz following fluctuating form and injury problems

The contract extension follows a challenging period during which Nebel’s long-term future in Mainz had appeared uncertain. The attacking midfielder endured a disappointing 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign after initially struggling to reproduce the performances that established him as an important player under former head coach Bo Henriksen.

His fortunes improved considerably during the spring. Following an injury to Nadiem Amiri, Nebel began to reestablish himself in Mainz’s attacking hierarchy. The youngster eventually produced a remarkable sequence of performances, including a brace in March’s Bundesliga victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. As documented in Get German Football News‘ coverage of Nebel’s resurgence, Fischer and captain Silvan Widmer praised the midfielder for overcoming his earlier difficulties through perseverance and hard work.

The renewed momentum nevertheless suffered another interruption during the summer. Nebel sustained an adductor injury during Mainz’s August training camp, ruling him out of the opening stages of the new campaign. The setback arrived at an unfortunate time. As GGFN‘s extensive Mainz preseason tactical preview had already suggested, competition for attacking positions under Fischer was becoming increasingly intense.

Nebel has only recently returned to competitive football, making substitute appearances against Schalke and Werder Bremen before earning his first Bundesliga start of the season against SV Elversberg. The latter encounter proved deeply disappointing. Nebel struggled to influence Mainz’s comprehensive 4-1 defeat and was substituted in the 63rd minute, receiving a 4/10 rating from GGFN.

His difficulties, however, have coincided with a much broader deterioration in Mainz’s performances.

Mainz confront troubling Bundesliga form crisis

Despite Friday’s positive contract announcement, Mainz enter Saturday’s Bundesliga encounter with Bayern Munich facing considerable questions about their recent form. Fischer’s side opened the campaign encouragingly, collecting ten points from their first six Bundesliga fixtures and briefly occupying fifth place.

Three consecutive competitive defeats have since dramatically altered the atmosphere around the club. Mainz first surrendered a home fixture against Werder Bremen, losing 2-3 before suffering a 0-2 DFB-Pokal elimination against second-division VfL Bochum. Last Friday’s humiliating defeat against promoted Elversberg subsequently brought their problems into sharper focus.

The difficulties extend beyond the results themselves.

Mainz currently rank 15th in the Bundesliga for total distance covered, 17th for sprints, and last in the league for intensive runs. Those figures are particularly concerning for a club traditionally associated with physical commitment, relentless pressing, and aggressive defensive work.

The decline has prompted questions about whether Mainz’s players have struggled to maintain the intensity required following an encouraging start to the campaign. Fischer acknowledged the negative trend during Friday’s pre-match press conference, emphasizing that his players must collectively return to the fundamental principles of Mainz football.

The Swiss trainer admitted that his proposed solutions were hardly revolutionary. Running, tackling, intensity, and aggression remain the essential ingredients. “I’m just boring, and I keep repeating myself,” Fischer joked. “You’re not getting anything new.”

Fischer must also contend with significant personnel shortages. Dominik Kohr and Silas remain unavailable through injury, while Phillipp Mwene and Stefan Posch are suspended. Mainz’s decision to extend Nebel’s contract therefore represents an important element of stability during an increasingly difficult period.

The youngster has already demonstrated that he can recover from setbacks and become an influential Bundesliga performer. His resurgence during the previous campaign provided one of the more encouraging individual stories of Fischer’s tenure.

Now both player and club must attempt to rediscover that momentum.

Statements on Paul Nebel’s contract extension

Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert praised the midfielder’s development and emphasized his importance to the club’s long-term plans.

“Paul is a prime example of how a player from our own youth academy can develop into a very important player for our Bundesliga team through passion, patience, and a down-to-earth attitude,” Bungert explained. “Paul is an important and reliable mainstay of our team and someone who has shown in recent years that he is always there when we need him. We’re delighted that we’ve found a very good solution for our future together.”

Nebel himself expressed his satisfaction with the agreement and reaffirmed his commitment to the club.

“Mainz 05 is my footballing home,” Nebel said. “I grew up at this club, spent formative years in the youth academy here, and developed into a Bundesliga professional. I’m very happy that I have the confidence of the people responsible and that we can continue on this path together. I’m highly motivated to repay this trust with performances and give everything for the club and the fans. We still have a great deal we want to achieve together as a team this season.”
