Liverpool identify Donyell Malen as a backup for Mohamed Salah

As reported by Bild, Liverpool have identified Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen as a potential backup for Mohamed Salah.

Less than a year ago, it had seemed as though BvB would cut their losses on Malen after the Dutchman struggled to adapt to the demands of German football. However, since the Bundesliga resumed after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Malen has transformed into one of the most dangerous wingers in Europe

During the back end of last season, Malen contributed 14 goals as Dortmund looked prime to snatch the Bundesliga title away from Bayern Munich. While Die Schwarzgelben would ultimately end up throwing away the Meisterschale on the final day, Malen’s fine form has carried into this season, enabling the Dortmund faithful to believe that they can mount another title challenge this campaign.

Therefore, with Liverpool showing concrete interest in the 24-year-old, Dortmund will be hoping to keep their prized asset at the club. Malen remains under contract until the summer of 2026, which would put Dortmund in a strong negotiating position if they are to make a significant profit on their €30m acquisition.

However, Jürgen Klopp’s long term admiration for Malen could play an important role in persuading the Dutchman on a move to Merseyside. The former Dortmund head coach had attempted to sign Malen while he was playing for PSV, and having been a product of the Arsenal academy, a return to England could become a tempting prospect for the 24-year-old.
