After a difficult start, Donyell Malen hits top form

Donyell Malen scored and then assisted Sébastien Haller on two occasions as Borussia Dortmund moved back to within one point of Bayern Munich after beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 5-2 on Saturday evening.

As reported by ESPN, Erling Haaland (15 goal contributions) is the only player in Europe’s top five leagues with more goal contributions in all competitions than Malen (13) since March 18.

Donyell Malen has finally arrived at Borussia Dortmund

There was high hopes for Malen after coming in from PSV following the departure of Jadon Sancho to Manchester United in 2021. The €30m fee appeared a steal at the time but the Dutchman struggled with just nine goals in 38 games across all competitions in his first season.

Malen struggled with injuries at the start of the 2022/23 season and he didn’t score his first Bundesliga goal until 19 February 2023 against Hertha Berlin, but the forward is now finding his form at a pivotal moment in Borussia Dortmund’s season.

With seven goals in his last seven Bundesliga games, Malen is playing with a smile on his face again and regained his confidence which has resulted in stellar performances on the pitch. Creating an understanding with Karim Adeyemi and Haller, the trio are scoring for fun at the moment.

Malen will be looking to continue his upturn in form in Borussia Dortmund’s final two Bundesliga games against Augsburg and Mainz as Die Schwarzgelben look to put an end to Bayern’s dominance in the Bundesliga.
