Burnley’s Wout Weghorst a target for Bayer Leverkusen

As reported by Kicker, Bayer Leverkusen are considering a move for Burnley striker Wout Weghorst.

The 30-year-old striker is currently attracting the interest of Leverkusen, with Die Werkself considering a potential loan for Weghorst. However, a move would be dependent on the situation surrounding Niclas Füllkrug.

Xabi Alonso’s side are in desperate need of a number nine due to Patrik Schick being set to miss the start of the season with the 27-year-old recovering from an abductor injury that was operated on in June. Leverkusen are hoping to lure in an experienced striker and this would perfectly fit both Weghorst and Füllkrug, who have scored over 100 Bundesliga goals combined.

Weghorst made the move from Wolfsburg to Burnley in January 2022, but with only five goal contributions in 20 league appearances, he would fail to help keep the side in the Premier League. After a loan to Beşiktaş, the 30-year-old spent the second half of this season on loan at Manchester United, but he has been unable to establish himself in Erik Ten Hag’s side.

For Leverkusen, this summer transfer window has so far been a statement of intent to the other Bundesliga sides. If they can continue to keep hold of Moussa Diaby and Jeremie Frimpong, then the arrival of a striker could be the final piece of Alonso’s jigsaw, as they will look to battle it out for the Meisterschale.
