Bayer Leverkusen interested in Werder Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug

According to Bild, Bayer Leverkusen are interested in Werder Bremen striker Niclas Füllkrug after Patrik Schick faces another injury setback.

Schick is set to miss the beginning of the season after the 27-year-old suffered a setback in his recovery from an abductor injury that he had operated on in June. Schick is set to be out until at least October, this means Leverkusen must look at alternatives at striker.

For Leverkusen, they want a striker who is affordable and experienced and who can immediately be integrated into the team preferably ahead of their training camp in Austria at the end of July.

Leverkusen have three options in mind. One is Bremen’s Füllkrug, who finished last season as the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer. Füllkrug’s contract at Bremen expires in 2025 and they hope that they can earn at least €20m in a sale of the 30-year-old. However, Fiorentina have also previously shown interest in Füllkrug, even holding initial talks with the 30-year-old.

Playing for Leverkusen would be a step up for Füllkrug as he will be able to play for a better-quality team while also playing in the Europa League ahead of the European Championships next summer in Germany.

An alternative is Real Madrid Alvaro Rodriguez, the 18-year-old could possibly be brought in on loan.
