Borussia Mönchengladbach appoint Nils Schmadtke as sporting director

Borussia Mönchengladbach have today announced the appointment of Nils Schmadtke, son of Liverpool’s Jörg Schmadtke, as the club’s new sporting director.

Schmadtke recently worked as chief scout as Wolfsburg, before re-joining Die Fohlen where he will work closely alongside Roland Virkus, the club’s managing director for sport and Steffen Korell, Gladbach’s scouting director, in a new restructured setup.

“Nils Schmadtke will take over the organisation of the first team and will be part of the leadership team alongside myself and Steffen Korell (director for scouting and squad planning). With Philipp Schützendorf leading the development team after our restructure, we are looking for sustained improvements to our first team and academy talents,” said Virkus.

This move comes following the appointment of Gerardo Seoane, formerly of Bayer Leverkusen, as the club’s new head coach following the sacking of Daniel Farke after Gladbach finished the season in 10th.

It’s expected to be a summer of upheaval at Borussia Mönchengladbach with Ramy Bensebaini joining Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer and both Marcus Thuram and Lars Stindl leaving the club following the expiry of their respective contracts.

French midfielder Manu Koné is also being courted by several clubs and it’s possible that he could leave the club for a fee upwards of €40m this summer.
