A crazy Bundesliga stat that no team wants

Opta reports that for the first time in Bundesliga history, five teams remain winless after the opening five games of the season. Mainz are bottom with just one point and are joined by Darmstadt and Köln. Borussia Mönchengladbach have collected two points this season while Bochum have three.

Mainz, coached by Bo Svensson, held Borussia Dortmund to a draw on the final day of last season which saw the Bundesliga title remain in Bayern Munich’s hands following their last minute win against Köln. It’s also worth noting that M05 finished just four points off of a place in a European competition this season, and so many people probably hadn’t predicted Die Nullfünfer to be propping up the table.

Köln, while only conceding nine goals this season, are struggling to find the net with just four goals after five games. No team has scored fewer than the Billy Goats, Mainz and Bochum.

Perhaps what’s more surprising is that Borussia Mönchengladbach find themselves just one point above the relegation playoff. Die Fohlen appointed former Bayer Leverkusen head coach Gerardo Seoane in the summer and although putting four past Augsburg on the opening weekend, also conceded four. Seoane’s side also lost out narrowly to Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, but it’s worrying times for the club who play Bochum, Mainz and Köln in their next three Bundesliga games.
