Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can has suffered a fresh injury blow. According to Bild, the 32-year-old will unlikely return to team training until after the international break after requiring surgery on his adductor muscles, in addition to his torn cruciate ligament – sustained against Bayern Munich on 28 February – which initially sidelined the German.
Despite being sidelined, Can remains an important player for Dortmund. The club decided to extend the player’s contract by a further year, until June 2027. What’s more, he remains a figurehead around the club, notably helping Nico Schlotterbeck during his rehabilitation.
“He accompanied me and was supporting me, because he’s simply an incredible guy,” said Schlotterbeck, who could make his return against Bodø/Glimt on Wednesday.
Speaking upon Can’s injury diagnosis in March, then BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl said: “He is our captain, always puts himself at the service of the team and is an important part of our club. Emre will receive every support from us over the next few months so that he can make a full recovery.”
