41 goals scored across 9 games in the Bundesliga

The Bundesliga started 2023 with a goalfest at the weekend. Across 9 games, 41 goals were scored and according to Opta, there’s only been one matchday with more goals since the turn of the millennium, round 34 (44 goals) in the 2001/02 season.

RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich kickstarted MD16 with a 1-1 draw on Friday night and then there were 19 goals across 5 games during the 15:30CET kick-offs. Wolfsburg beat then second-placed club Freiburg 6-0, Union Berlin overturned a 1-0 deficit to beat Hoffenheim and Bochum beat relegation rivals Hertha Berlin 3-1. Eintracht Frankfurt strengthened their grip in Europe with a comfortable 3-0 win against Schalke whilst Stuttgart held Mainz to a 1-1 draw.

The Bundesliga’s Topspiel on Saturday may not have looked great on paper, but it provided a spectacle. Steffen Baumgart’s FC Köln raced into a 5-0 lead inside 36 minutes before Niclas Füllkrug pulled a goal back. Köln then scored a further two goals to secure an emphatic 7-1 win against Werder Bremen.

Sunday provided a similar story. Borussia Dortmund vs Augsburg provided a 7 goal thriller, Gio Reyna scoring 12 minutes from time to secure a 4-3 win, whilst Bayer Leverkusen found themselves 3-0 up against Borussia Mönchengladbach before Lars Stindl scored a brace.
