Julian Nagelsmann satisfied with Yann Sommer’s Bayern Munich debut

Speaking in a press conference ahead of Bayern Munich’s game against FC Köln on Tuesday, Julian Nagelsmann praised the debut of Yann Sommer following his arrival from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

“He did a great job and knows how to play,” said Nagelsmann. “If you’re taking risks, then it’s okay to make mistakes every now and then. It’s always about weighing those risks. He did very well and I was very pleased with him.”

Sommer (34) arrived from Borussia Möncehngladbach last week for a reported €9m including bonuses. The Switzerland international signed a 2.5-year deal with the Rekordmeister and will cover Manuel Neuer for the remainder of the season after he broke his leg in a skiing accident last month.

Sommer has a wealth of experience of playing football in Germany, having played 335 games for Borussia Mönchengladbach across all competitions following his move from FC Basel in 2014. The Swiss ‘keeper made himself the undisputed No. 1 at Die Fohlen and became a fan favourite during his time there.

Bayern Munich discussed the idea of ending Alexander Nübel’s loan prematurely but were unable to reach an agreement with AS Monaco, and so went all in for Sommer. In Neuer’s absence, Sven Ulreich will act as back-up to Sommer.
