Official | Yann Sommer joins Bayern Munich as Manuel Neuer replacement

Bayern Munich have announced the signing of Yann Sommer from Borussia Mönchengladbach for a reported €9m including bonuses. The 34-year-old Switzerland international goalkeeper has signed a contract until 2025.

On his move to Bayern, Sommer said: “I’m very excited about the new challenge at FC Bayern. It’s a big, powerful club.

“We’ve played against each other many times – I know the enormous quality and aura of this club. I’m proud that I’m now a part of FC Bayern. We have some big challenges ahead of us. I’m hugely looking forward to starting here with my new teammates, and to everything that is to come.”

Sommer played 335 times for Gladbach since his move from Basel in 2014. He made himself undisputed number one at the club and was key in them qualifying for the Champions League. His last game for Gladbach was against Darmstadt in the DFB Pokal where he went off injured in the 13th minute.

Bayern have been looking for a replacement goalkeeper for Manuel Neuer. This comes after the 36-year-old injured himself on a skiing holiday. The Rekordmeister showed an interest in ending Alexander Nübel’s loan at AS Monaco but were unable to reach an agreement with the Principality club.

First meets third on Friday evening as Bayern Munich travel to RB Leipzig.
