Stoke City reach agreement to sign Rabbi Matondo (Schalke) on loan

Championship side Stoke City have reached an agreement with Schalke 04 to sign Rabbi Matondo on a six-month loan deal, according to Sport1.

Matondo is expected to be announced as a Stoke City player early next week with only the final details left to be clarified. The 20-year-old Welshman has played just 223 minutes of Bundesliga football for Schalke this season, who haven’t won in 30 Bundesliga games.

Since joining Schalke from Manchester City in 2019 for an initial €9 million, the Wales international has failed to reach his potential and has become somewhat of a bit part player under then head coach David Wagner and later Manuel Baum.

In October 2020, Matondo was left out of Schalke’s squad due to ongoing transfer negotiations – he received two offers from unnamed Bundesliga clubs whilst Serie A side Atalanta had shown an interest in signing the attacker.

Given his bit-part role, it’s looking likely that Matondo will leave the Bundesliga club on loan this winter as they look to bring in new faces as they battle against relegation.
