Mainz 05 to announce new head coach on Tuesday

Bundesliga side Mainz 05 will present a new head coach on Tuesday, presumably former defender Bo Svensson, according to Kicker.

“We had good talks, the contracts have been negotiated but not yet signed. We will present a new coach on Tuesday,” sporting director Martin Schmidt told Sky Germany.

A compensation fee to be paid to FC Liefering is why the new head coach hasn’t been unveiled yet but it’s likely to be announced early next week.

Svensson’s assistant, Babak Keyhanfar, will also follow him to Mainz 05, replacing Jan-Moritz Lichte who took charge on an interim basis in September following the dismissal of Achim Beierlorzer after just two games.

Former sporting director Christian Heidel returned to the club on Monday to undertake a boardroom role while former head coach Martin Schmidt is the club’s new sporting director.

Occupying 17th, Mainz are four points adrift of the relegation play-off after a 5-2 defeat at Bayern Munich on Sunday evening.
