Schalke 04 have officially completed the signing of South Korea international Hee-chan Hwang from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The now 30-year-old attacker joins the newly-promoted Bundesliga side on loan through the end of the 2026/27 campaign. Schalke have also secured a purchase option, which Sky Germany reports is worth approximately €3m.
Hwang arrives as another experienced but comparatively inexpensive addition to a squad that Get German Football News examined extensively in its recent 2026/27 Schalke tactical preview. The Royal Blues largely resisted rebuilding their promotion-winning team from scratch, instead supplementing Miron Muslić’s existing structure with targeted Bundesliga experience.
That approach already produced Junior Dina Ebimbe’s remarkably inexpensive return to Germany and a new contract for veteran striker Edin Džeko. Hwang now supplies yet another experienced attacking option capable of occupying several positions.
Hwang returns for third stint in German football
This will not be Hwang’s first stint in Germany. The South Korean first arrived in the Bundesrepublik during the 2018/19 campaign on a season-long loan with current Bundesliga outfit Hamburg. He scored twice in 20 2. Bundesliga appearances before returning to RB Salzburg.
A much more consequential German move followed in summer 2020. RB Leipzig signed Hwang from Salzburg on a five-year contract after the attacker produced 16 goals and 21 assists across all competitions during his final Austrian campaign.
The move initially looked like an excellent stylistic fit. Hwang offered pace, aggressive ball-carrying, movement across the front line and the ability to attack from either wider positions or centrally. Those qualities flashed during the opening weeks of the campaign, but his first Bundesliga season never developed any real rhythm.
A severe COVID infection following international duty with South Korea in November 2020 proved especially disruptive. Hwang required an extended recovery period and subsequently struggled to regain both fitness and a regular place in then-Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann’s attacking rotation.
His situation nevertheless improved during the second half of the season. Hwang gradually worked his way back into Nagelsmann’s plans and began appearing in several different attacking configurations. His Bundesliga numbers remained modest – no goals and one assist in 20 appearances – but the wider picture became considerably more encouraging as spring progressed.
The clearest moment arrived in the DFB-Pokal.
Hwang scored Leipzig’s opening goal in extra time during their dramatic 2-1 semi-final victory over Werder Bremen and subsequently earned a place in the starting XI for the final against Borussia Dortmund. He finished his lone Leipzig campaign with three goals in 29 competitive appearances.
The recovery came too late to establish a long-term future in Saxony.
Five years at Wolves follow Leipzig departure
Hwang left Leipzig after only one season, initially moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. England ultimately proved a considerably more stable home.
Wolves later converted the deal into a permanent transfer and Hwang remained at Molineux for five years. Across 150 competitive appearances, he registered 27 goals and 12 assists. His Premier League record alone stands at 24 goals in 133 appearances.
Hwang’s role nevertheless became less consistent during the latter stages of his Wolves spell. Injuries contributed to reduced playing time across the past two seasons before the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.
The 82-times-capped South Korea international remained involved on the international stage, featuring in all three of his country’s matches at this summer’s World Cup, but his club future became increasingly open as Wolves prepared for life in the Championship.
Schalke have now provided the route back to Germany.
Five years after leaving Leipzig, Hwang receives another chance to establish himself properly in the Bundesliga.
