Hamburg have officially completed the permanent return of Fábio Vieira from Arsenal, bringing last season’s most influential creative player back to the Volksparkstadion on a long-term deal. According to Kicker and Transfermarkt, Hamburg will pay Arsenal approximately €9m for the Portuguese attacking midfielder.
The fee represents a remarkable conclusion to one of HSV’s longest-running summer transfer pursuits. Hamburg allowed a purchase option reportedly worth €22m to expire following Vieira’s successful 2025/26 loan spell and subsequently refused to meet Arsenal’s reduced asking price of approximately €18m. Sporting director Claus Costa instead waited.
Arsenal ultimately accepted a deal worth roughly half of that second valuation, allowing HSV to permanently secure a player currently valued at €18m.
Hamburg bring back proven difference-maker
Vieira requires virtually no introduction to Merlin Polzin’s squad. The former FC Porto playmaker joined Hamburg on loan from Arsenal on deadline day last summer in what Get German Football News described at the time as one of the Bundesliga transfer coups of the summer. The initial excitement quickly proved justified.
Vieira developed into the primary creative reference point in Hamburg’s first Bundesliga season following promotion. An early tactical adjustment proved particularly important. After initially appearing from wider positions, Polzin moved Vieira centrally in September. From central areas, Vieira could dictate possession, play the final or penultimate pass and provide the kind of attacking imagination HSV otherwise struggled to reproduce consistently. His form continued to improve as the season progressed.

The feared farewell has now proven temporary.
Vieira returns after excellent Bundesliga season
Vieira finished the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign with seven goals and five assists. Across all competitions, the Portuguese attacker registered 13 goal contributions in 31 appearances and established himself as Hamburg’s leading offensive producer.
Arsenal had little long-term use for Vieira, whose contract was approaching its final year, while Hamburg knew the player was prepared to wait for a return. HSV therefore rejected the temptation to pay the original option or Arsenal’s subsequent €18m valuation.
The eventual €9m agreement vindicates that strategy.
Vieira and El Ouahdi complete major deadline investment
The permanent deal forms part of an unusually ambitious finish to Hamburg’s summer transfer window. HSV have also completed the signing of Morocco international Zakaria El Ouahdi from KRC Genk. The Moroccan arrived for an €8m base fee with another €3m potentially payable through bonuses, while Genk retained a sell-on percentage.
Together, Vieira and El Ouahdi represent a major investment in two areas that remained obvious weaknesses entering the campaign. Vieira restores the creative centerpiece. El Ouahdi supplies the dynamic right-sided presence HSV lacked after the departures of William Mikelbrencis and Giorgi Gocholeishvili.
Their arrivals push Hamburg’s overall summer spending beyond €30m and raise the estimated squad value to approximately €150m.
