Mainz 05 have officially confirmed the departure of Norwegian international Andreas Hanche-Olsen to MLS side Chicago Fire. The 29-year-old centre-back leaves the Rheinhessen club with immediate effect after three-and-a-half years at the MEWA Arena. Hanche-Olsen has reportedly signed a long-term contract with Chicago, where he will continue his career alongside former Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.
The transfer comes shortly after the Norwegian found himself outside Mainz’s immediate plans at the beginning of the new campaign. Hanche-Olsen was omitted from the matchday squad for the club’s opening two competitive fixtures and subsequently explored the possibility of leaving before the transfer deadline. Mainz have received a fee for the €3.5m-valued defender, but it has not been disclosed.
His departure comes only 14 months after Mainz extended his contract through 2028. The defender leaves having made 77 competitive appearances for Mainz while also establishing himself as a regular Norway international. He has earned 22 senior caps for his country.
Hanche-Olsen quickly becomes indispensable in Mainz
Mainz brought Hanche-Olsen to Germany from KAA Gent during the January 2023 transfer window. The move initially carried relatively little fanfare, but the Norwegian needed little time to establish himself under then-head coach Bo Svensson. His physicality, willingness to defend aggressively and ability to step forward from the back quickly made him a natural fit for Mainz’s three-man defensive line.
Within months, Hanche-Olsen had progressed from winter reinforcement to first-choice defender.
One of the defining moments of his Bundesliga career arrived on the final day of the 2022/23 season.
With Borussia Dortmund requiring victory over Mainz to secure the Bundesliga title, Hanche-Olsen stunned Signal Iduna Park by scoring the opening goal with a diving header after just 15 minutes. Mainz eventually drew 2-2, allowing Bayern Munich to dramatically retain the championship on goal difference.
The goal ensured that Hanche-Olsen would remain attached to one of the most memorable Bundesliga finales of the modern era.
His work beyond that famous afternoon was less spectacular but arguably more important to Mainz. Hanche-Olsen supplied the aggression and defensive reliability required in Svensson’s back three while also proving capable of stepping into midfield areas with the ball and defending large spaces when Mainz pressed higher up the pitch.
Injuries derail promising second season
The momentum did not carry cleanly into 2023/24.
Hanche-Olsen suffered ankle problems during preseason and attempted to play through the issue before eventually requiring surgery. The operation sidelined him for several months and removed a player who had very quickly become one of Mainz’s most dependable natural central defenders.
His absence coincided with a wider defensive crisis. Mainz were repeatedly forced to improvise in the back three as injuries stripped Svensson of natural options. Midfielder Dominik Kohr was regularly required in defence while other combinations were reshuffled from week to week.
Hanche-Olsen’s eventual return therefore carried significance far beyond simply restoring another body to the squad.
By the time he returned during the second half of the season, Bo Henriksen had replaced Svensson and inherited a team fighting desperately against relegation.
The Norwegian initially needed time to recover his rhythm after the long absence, but gradually re-established himself alongside Kohr and Sepp van den Berg. By March and April, Hanche-Olsen had again become one of Mainz’s most influential defenders.
The trio formed the aggressive defensive foundation behind Henriksen’s increasingly effective relegation fight, while Hanche-Olsen himself also supplied an important goal in the emphatic 4-0 victory over Darmstadt.
His return coincided with Mainz finally developing the defensive stability required to climb away from the automatic relegation places. Another injury interruption followed before the season ended, but Mainz ultimately completed one of the Bundesliga’s more remarkable escape acts.
Further setbacks fail to diminish Hanche-Olsen’s standing
The injury pattern nevertheless continued. Hanche-Olsen regained a regular place early in the 2024/25 campaign before suffering a broken toe in October. The setback ruled him out for several weeks just as he had begun establishing himself again.
By the time he returned, veteran Stefan Bell had performed strongly enough to create genuine competition for places. Hanche-Olsen therefore faced the unusual challenge of regaining his starting berth even after recovering fitness.
That period illustrated the central tension that came to define much of his Mainz career.
When healthy and in rhythm, Hanche-Olsen frequently looked tailor-made for the club’s aggressive defensive football. Maintaining the continuity required to remain an unquestioned starter proved considerably more difficult.
Mainz nevertheless retained considerable faith in him. In July 2025, the club rewarded the defender with a new contract through 2028. GGFN’s report on the extension highlighted both his injury difficulties and the popularity he had earned through his uncompromising style.
Hanche-Olsen described Mainz as his “second home” when signing the new deal. He remained part of Henriksen’s plans as Mainz prepared for European football, with Get German Football News noting his contribution to the defensive rotation ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Defensive depth eventually squeezes Hanche-Olsen out
The circumstances changed considerably over the following year. Hanche-Olsen returned for the 2026 preseason in strong physical condition and made a determined effort to reclaim a prominent role. He even scored the winner in Mainz’s friendly against Shabab Al-Ahli with a header from a Paul Nebel corner.
But the competition around him had become dramatically stronger.
As detailed in Get German Football News’s 2026/27 Mainz tactical preview, Mainz entered the season with an unusually deep collection of central defenders. The arrivals of Stefan Posch and Fabio Gruber added further competition to a group already containing Kohr, Bell, Danny da Costa, Kacper Potulski and emerging prospect Rael Nakuzola.
For a player who had once been so essential that Mainz’s entire defensive structure suffered during his absences, the depth chart had fundamentally changed. Hanche-Olsen was subsequently left out of Mainz’s first two competitive matchday squads. Rather than spend another season fighting for irregular minutes, the Norwegian accepted the opportunity to begin a substantially different chapter in MLS.
His departure closes a Mainz career characterized by much more than the injury record alone.
Hanche-Olsen arrived as a relatively understated winter signing, rapidly established himself as a Bundesliga starter, scored one of the most consequential goals of the 2022/23 title race and later fought his way back from major surgery to play an important role in Mainz’s dramatic 2024 relegation escape.
