FEATURE | Werder Bremen are moving in the right direction under Daniel Thioune as unbeaten run continues

Werder Bremen’s remarkable transformation under Daniel Thioune continued with a convincing 2-0 home victory over Hoffenheim, extending their unbeaten Bundesliga run to seven matches and providing further evidence that the club is moving in the right direction.

After spending much of last season battling against relegation, Bremen are now playing with confidence, determination and a clear tactical identity. What initially appeared to be a campaign focused on avoiding another relegation battle is gradually developing into something considerably more exciting.

Thioune has transformed Werder Bremen’s mentality

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Bremen’s recent form is their ability to win matches in different ways.

Their dramatic comeback against Augsburg demonstrated resilience, while the draw against Borussia Dortmund showed they could compete with stronger opposition. Victories over Mainz and Hoffenheim have now added another important element: consistency.

Thioune deserves considerable credit for creating an environment in which players understand their responsibilities and are willing to fight for one another.

Bremen are no longer a team that appears vulnerable whenever opponents increase the pressure. Instead, they have developed the confidence to manage difficult situations and remain competitive throughout matches.

Füllkrug remains the difference-maker

It is impossible to discuss Bremen’s resurgence without mentioning Niclas Füllkrug.

The German international scored his ninth Bundesliga goal of the season against Hoffenheim, opening the scoring in the 57th minute before Eren Dinkçi secured the victory with an excellent finish in the 82nd minute.

Füllkrug has now scored in seven consecutive Bundesliga matches, matching a remarkable achievement last accomplished by Werder legend Rudi Völler during the 1982/83 season. No Bremen player has ever scored nine goals in the opening eight Bundesliga matchdays.

His influence extends beyond goals. Füllkrug gives Bremen a reliable attacking focal point, brings experience to a relatively young squad and provides the leadership required during difficult moments.

His return has transformed Bremen’s attack, but Thioune deserves credit for creating a system that allows the striker to thrive.

From relegation worries to European ambitions?

Bremen’s improvement becomes even more impressive when considering their recent history.

For several seasons, the club have struggled to establish themselves as consistent Bundesliga contenders. Relegation in 2021 and subsequent battles near the bottom of the table highlighted how far Werder had fallen from their successful years under Thomas Schaaf.

Thioune’s work is gradually changing that narrative.

The victory over Hoffenheim also represented an important defensive improvement. Bremen had conceded 14 goals in their opening seven Bundesliga matches, making their clean sheet particularly encouraging.

It would be premature to describe Bremen as genuine European contenders after only eight matches. However, their unbeaten run, Füllkrug’s extraordinary goalscoring form and the confidence developing throughout the squad suggest that something promising is happening at the Weserstadion.

The challenge now is maintaining that momentum.

For the first time in several seasons, Werder supporters have reasons to look towards the upper half of the Bundesliga rather than constantly worrying about the relegation places.

Thioune has not simply improved Bremen’s results. He is beginning to restore the belief that this historic club can once again compete for something more meaningful than survival.
