“That’s why we keep going” – Bayer Leverkusen’s Simon Rolfes has eye on treble

Bayer Leverkusen may be crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time in the club’s history, but Simon Rolfes doesn’t believe that will take away any focus from going for a treble-winning season.

On Thursday night, they play West Ham at their London Stadium with a 2-0 lead as they look to book their place in a Europa League semi-final. With their place in the DFB Pokal final also booked, Bayer’s incredible story could end with three trophies.

When asked whether Bayer could lose focus after their Bundesliga title, sporting director Rolfes said: “I have no worries because we already had the self-confidence in the last few weeks that we could win the championship. You could see on Sunday that we kept going. [Florian] Wirtz didn’t want to stop scoring goals. These were very special circumstances as the fans were already on the sidelines.

“And no, there was no tension drop because we always had all three goals in mind during the season. And we’ve achieved one now, but not two yet. That’s why we keep going.”
