Borussia Dortmund have announced that they have completed the signing of left-back Ian Maatsen from Chelsea on a season-long loan.
Maatsen joins Dortmund until the end of the season. There is no buy option in the loan agreement with Chelsea but it is reported that there is a release clause in his new Chelsea contract that he has signed, reports Fabrizio Romano.
On joining Dortmund Maatsen said: “Borussia Dortmund has made an intensive effort for me. I have been following BVB and its fans for a long time, was even at the Champions League game in Manchester in autumn 2022 to see the team live on the grass. I am very happy that it has now worked out with the loan. I promise that I will give everything for the success of the team and am really looking forward to the Yellow Wall.”
The 21-year-old will provide much-needed alternatives in the left-back position. This season Julian Ryerson has been consistent but is not at the quality for where Dortmund want to be, while summer signing Ramy Bensebaini is away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria and his form during his first six months at Dortmund has not been good.
However, the right-back area is still an issue for die Schwarzgelben as they continue to rely on Marius Wolf and the aforementioned Ryerson in that position.
This is Dortmund’s second move of the window after they brought Jadon Sancho back to the club on loan for the rest of the season to help improve their underperforming attack.
