Notable details from Xabi Alonso’s press conference

In a press conference dominated by the future of Xabi Alonso, the Bayer Leverkusen head coach spoke on why he made such a decision as well as the time line for returns for Victor Boniface and Exequeil Palacios.

The biggest news from the press conference was Alonso’s decision to stay at Leverkusen despite interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich. On his decision, the former midfielder said: “It was a process that has developed in recent weeks and months. This is my first complete season with a club as a coach. I still have to feel in, prove things to myself, gain experience. The situation in this club is very stable and I am happy.” Alonso added “Management has always supported me and still does. Everyone helps me great here. We wanted to play a great season and were sure we had the potential to do so.” Alonso finished with “My job is definitely not over here. We still have a lot to do.”

However, Alonso provided an update on the fitness of Exequiel Palacios and Victor Boniface. The home against Hoffenheim comes too early for the dup but they could make the bench for their DFB-Pokal. Boniface has been out since January after picking up an abductor injury whilst with Nigeria in preparation for the Africa Cup of Naitions, while Palacios missed the international break with a hamstring injury picked up against Freiburg.

Despite being 10 points clear of title rivals Bayern, Alonso also gave a warning about not being complacent: “But there are still eight games to play. Anything can happen with the Bavarians, we know that. The next three or four games are almost the key”

Leverkusen are on the verge of a memorable season as they edge towards their maiden Bundesliga title win as well as in the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal against favourable opposition and a tough route to the Europa League final.
