Xabi Alonso confirms that he will stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s game against Hoffenheim, Xabi Alonso confirmed he will stay at the club next season.

On his future and decision, Alonso said: “I had a good meeting with Bayer Leverkusen and I informed them that I informed them that I will continue as coach of Leverkusen…I feel this is the right place for me to be and to develop as a coach.”

It was reported last night (Thursday) that Alonso has turned down both Liverpool and Bayern Munich to stay at Leverkusen for another season. Both clubs will now have to turn their attentions elsewhere in their search for new managers.

During his year-and-a-half spell at Leverkusen, Alonso has turned the team around from an underperforming team that usually fights for European places to this dominating side which plays some of the best football in the Bundesliga.

Alonso’s decision to stay will give Leverkusen even more motivation as they look to wrap up the Bundesliga title as well as win the DFB-Pokal and Europa League. This will also provide the likes of sporting director Simon Rolfes the ability to begin preparations for next season.
