Julian Nagelsmann discusses Leon Goretzka’s omission from the Germany squad

Julian Nagelsmann has omitted Leon Goretzka from his latest Germany squad for their upcoming friendlies against France and the Netherlands.

There’s six debutants in the latest squad, including Aleksander Pavlović but speaking at a press conference, Nagelsmann stated that the call-up of Goretzka’s Bayern Munich teammate isn’t the reasoning behind the 29-year-old’s omission.

“The decision wasn’t between Pavlović and Goretzka,” said Nagelsmann. “Leon’s last few games have been much more stable again, but it’s also about finding the right players for the role.

“I also see other players ahead at the moment. Then it’s time to find the right roles for the rear, but of course the door isn’t always closed. He was frustrated but in the end I have to make a decision.”

Goretzka has played 30 games across all competitions for Bayern Munich this season, scoring four and creating nine.

In Nagelsmann’s Germany squad is Toni Kroos. The Real Madrid player returns to the national team after retiring from international football in 2021.
