Julian Nagelsmann confirms key players may miss out at Euro 2024

Speaking in an interview with Der Spiegel (via @iMiaSanMia), Julian Nagelsmann confirms some key players will likely miss the Euro 2024 squad as he looks to refresh the Germany squad.

When asked about the motto of “mentality beats talent.” of predecessor Hansi Flick’s squad that did work, Nagelsmann said: “That’s why we’re changing the squad compared to the World Cup in Qatar. We don’t have to call up ten new players, but some players, whom many people think will definitely be there, will not be called up” However, the coach did not provide any update on who the players may be.

One of the big stories this week surrounding the German national team was the return of Toni Kroos. On what the veteran midfielder will bring to the squad and how he will fit, Nagelsmann said: “He will fit perfectly into the team we have in mind as a connection player in midfield. He will do us good with his experience. Kroos has a special role at his club Real Madrid, he guides young players and shows them how they can work well together as part of a team. Toni is a player who will stay calm and keep his composure even in a tight European Championship game and who you can always pass to under pressure. Toni has a very clear view of the state of our national team. With each conversation, I felt that he was increasingly enthusiastic about being there at the home Euros and supporting us” Nagelsmann also emphasised that Kroos will not impact the current hierarchy in the national team: “I spoke to many players on the phone in advance and listened carefully to see if anyone could have a problem with Kroos. On the contrary, Everyone was very positive”

Finally, Nagelsmann confirms that Joshua Kimmich will play at right-back during the Euros and this will not be caused by the return of Kroos: “Incidentally, he would also have played at right-back if Kroos had not returned. Of course, every player has a favourite position. If I asked Manuel Neuer, he would definitely like to dictate the play in midfield, which he might be able to do. But he’s much better as a goalkeeper. What I want to say is: With the national team you have to subordinate yourself. You are a servant for your country. That’s Kimmich”

In the upcoming March international break, Germany have two friendlies against France in Lyon, before hosting the Netherlands in Frankfurt. There will then likely be another set of friendlies before they kick off Euro 2024 against Scotland in Munich on 14th June.
