Is Julian Nagelsmann set to become the new Borussia Dortmund head coach?

After 20 years at Borussia Dortmund, Hans-Joachim Watzke’s time at the club will come to an end in 2025, and the 64-year-old is looking to restructure the club for when he departs. While there is still yet to be clarification regarding who or how Watzke himself could be replaced, there could be a change of head coach to lead Die Schwarzgelben into a new era.

As reported by Sky Germany, due to the significant number of upcoming changes at Dortmund, there is no guarantee that Edin Terzić will remain at the club beyond the summer. Despite still garnering support from Watzke, if BvB fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, it is almost certain that Terzić will be replaced.

However, even if Champions League qualification is achieved, Dortmund will face a dilemma. Current Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann is looking to make a decision on his future before the European Championships begin in June, and he is held in high regard by those at the Westfalenstadion.

Watzke appreciates the former Bayern Munich head coach and was the person to lure him to the DFB. As well as this, Dortmund have come close to appointing Nagelsmann twice in the past, meaning that he is certainly highly valued at the club.

Regardless, there is yet to be contact made between the two parties, and Nagelsmann himself is seriously considering a move abroad. This would leave BvB having to look for a possible alternative to Nagelsmann, and it is understood that they would be willing to turn to Terzić’s current assistant Nuri Şahin.

Nevertheless, it is clear that Terzić’s job is far from safe, and if Dortmund do want to build themselves into a consistent challenger to Bayern, then Nagelsmann would undoubtedly be the standout candidate.
