Can Uzun decides to represent Turkey over Germany at international level

Sky Germany reports that Nürnberg forward Can Uzun has chosen to represent Turkey at international level over Germany.

Uzun is one of the biggest talents in the 2.Bundesliga and is likely to move to a Bundesliga side in the summer. The decision of the 18-year-old follows fellow dual-nationality future teammate Kenan Yildiz who also chose to represent Turkey over Germany.

It is reported that Turkey manager, Vincenzo Montella is planning to include Uzun in Turkey’s squad for Euro 2024 and the 18-year-old will be involved in this upcoming international break where they play Hungary and Austria. Turkey’s group at Euro 2024 sees them play Portugal, Czechia and the winner of Playoff C.

Uzun has played for Turkey at youth level, most notably playing for them at the under-17 European Championship.

On his decision to play for Turkey, Uzun said: “I listened to my heart. Such a decision is not a career decision like a change of club, but a heartfelt decision. You have to feel the national team and here my heart and stomach said that Turkey is the right choice for me.”

Former Bayern Munich, Schalke and Darmstadt midfielder Hamit Altintop, who is also dual-nationality and a member of the board at the Turkish football federation, played a key role in convincing Uzun to choose Turkey over Germany.
