Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus confirms rebuild will conitnue in the summer

In an interview with the club website after a dreaded week that saw Borussia Mönchengladbach eliminated from the DFB Pokal as well as drawing with Köln and Heidenheim, sporting director Roland Virkus confirmed the club will continue rebuilding this summer.

When asked about the need for a ‘New Gladbach’ following head coach Gerardo Seaoane’s comments at the weekend, Virkus said: “And that is exactly the upheaval we are talking about and with which we have already started. We are all working on this together. We were already able to add some new attributes to the squad last summer. That’s exactly where we have to continue this summer and continue to change the squad.”

Die Fohlen currently sit 12th in the Bundesliga and with very little prospects for the remainder of the season after their shock elimination in midweek.

Last summer, Gladbach lost several key players in Lars Stindl, Marcus Thuram, Jonas Hofmann and Ramy Bensebaini and has yet to adequately replace the departed players. The arrivals of Robin Hack, Tomas Cvancara, Franck Honorat, Maximilian Wöber and Jordan have been hit and miss throughout this season.

Whilst heading into the transfer window this year Gladbach will need to find central defenders, a creative force in midfield as well as additional attackers. The club have already added midfield reinforcements with Holstein Kiel captain Philipp Sander expected to join Gladbach.
