Will Bayern Munich’s matchday seven hoodoo strike again?

It has been a demanding few weeks for Bayern Munich, with Die Rekordmeister having to contend with multiple injuries and a congested fixture list. However, a visit from Freiburg on matchday seven presents a whole new challenge for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

In the last seven years, Bayern have only been able to taste victory on matchday seven once. As well as this, in the previous four seasons, Die Rekordmeister have succumbed to their first defeat of the campaign on matchday seven on three occasions.

To make matters worse for the reigning German champions, Freiburg proved last season in the DFB-Pokal that they have the ability to come away from the Allianz Arena as victors. However, there are positive signs that Bayern can take into their clash with Christian Streich’s side.

Die Rekordmeister are unbeaten against Freiburg in the Bundesliga since 2015, while the side from the Black Forest are experiencing an inconsistent start to the campaign. It will undoubtedly be a challenge for Bayern, but as Tuchel explained during the pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, Bayern know they can overcome Freiburg:

“Now I’m thinking about it for the first time. Afterwards, we played against Freiburg again and won in Freiburg. Freiburg are very flexible, they currently often change the basic order, man and space coverage… we have to concentrate on ourselves – and be awake on the pitch. The requirements may change a few times. They will do everything they can to make our lives difficult.
