Tom Krauß will undergo a medical at Mainz

As reported by Florian Plettenberg, Tom Krauß is expected to undergo a medical at Mainz ahead of a move from RB Leipzig.

Mainz’s long-term pursuit of the German under-21 international has finally paid off as Krauß is set to sign for the carnival club on a four-year deal until the summer of 2027. The fee that has been agreed between Mainz and Leipzig is expected to accumulate to a total of €7m with an initial €5m being paid upfront, before a potential €2m in add-ons.

Despite interest from the Premier League, the 22-year-old has elected to sign for Bo Svensson’s side next season. A possible influence on Krauß’s decision could be due to the way he has been developed in the Leipzig academy, which perfectly fits into Svensson’s style of play and the ‘Mainz DNA’.

Last season, Krauß would feature 33 times for his boyhood club Schalke as they would face relegation from the Bundesliga alongside Hertha Berlin. He would also be part of a disappointing European Championship for the German under-21 squad that would see the reigning champions eliminated during the group stage.

With Anton Stach and Leandro Barreiro reported with potential moves away from Mainz this summer, Krauß could be seen as a potential replacement for one of Bo Svensson’s key players. However, with the form Mainz showed during the Rückrunde, if they are to keep the core of their squad together they may be able to push for a European spot next season.
