RB Leipzig vs Union Berlin: 3 things we learned

Union Berlin stay one point behind Bayern Munich after they came from behind to beat RB Leipzig 2-1. Benjamin Henrichs opened the scoring for Leipzig with a long range effort. After halftime, Janik Haberer equalised with a volley before Robin Knoche scored the winner with a penalty after a handball from Mohamed Simakan. Leipzig had a Yussuf Poulsen goal ruled out for offside.

Union Berlin don’t stop

Union have won all of their games since the return of the Bundesliga after a poor end to last year and look back to their best. Earlier on in the year they topped the table before their poor run of form, but they have been able to re-find this form once again as they maintain a one point gap behind Bayern.

Union’s challenge now will be managing European football on top of their Bundesliga schedule as they face Ajax on Thursday. The had managed European football to an extent in the first half of the season, but the quality this time around will be better.

Robin Knoche is the best defender in the league this season

Converting the penalty to give Union the lead topped of his performance. Knoche has shown that he is arguably the Bundesliga’s best defender this season as he has been at the heart of Union’s defence for the whole season and has led the team as the second best defence in the league.

Apart from the Henrich’s long range effort and when Leipzig were chasing the game, Leipzig barely troubled Union and Knoche is one of the main reasons why.

Benjamin Henrichs may solve Germany’s right-back problem

Henrichs missed out on a call-up to the German national team for the World Cup with his teammate Lukas Klostermann earning one instead, but with right-back being an issue for Germany Henrichs maybe the solution. The 25-year-old showed his versatility starting the game at left-back before switching to his preferred side at half-time.

Since Rose has taken over Henrichs has been able to show his attacking capability, which is what Germany lacked in Qatar. Henrich is also a natural right back meaning he has the capability to defend well unlike David Raum.
