Manuel Neuer returns to Bayern Munich training

Manuel Neuer has returned to Bayern Munich training for the first time since breaking his leg in a skiing accident late last year, Sky Germany reports.

The 37-year-old Bayern and Germany captain was ruled out of the 2022/23 season when he broke his leg during a holiday after the World Cup. However, the Bayern legend finally made a return to training today, six months since his accident. Neuer completed a series of drills with goalkeeping coach Michaelrechner and rehabilitation expert Thomas Wilhelmi.

However, it will still be some time before we see Neuer in a Bayern Munich jersey once again. The captain aims to be back for the start of next season but a comeback won’t be rushed.  However, Thomas Tuchel does see Neuer as the number one for Bayern next season, whenever his return may be.

Since Neuer’s injured, Bayern have signed former Borussia Mönchengladbach captain Yann Sommer. The Swiss international has since taken the number one role. With Tuchel’s comments in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Sommer leave Bayern in the summer.

With the European Championships on the horizon, it may force Sommer to look at alternatives as he cannot afford to sit on the bench at Bayern as his compatriots Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund) and Jonas Omlin (Gladbach) both continue to play at their clubs.
