A departure for Bayern Munich’s Yann Sommer would not be a surprise

Kicker reports that a departure of Yann Sommer from Bayern Munich in the summer is now a possibility and would not be a surprise.

The 34-year-old joined Bayern in the winter from Borussia Mönchengladbach as a replacement for Manuel Neuer, who broke his leg during a skiing accident, but at times he has not impressed and it is reported that Neuer is making good progress towards his comeback and Thomas Tuchel sees Neuer as the number one for Bayern next season.

With the European Championships on the horizon, it may force Sommer to look at alternatives as he cannot afford to sit on the bench at Bayern as his compatriots Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund) and Jonas Omlin (Gladbach) both continue to play at their clubs.

Sommer’s contract at Bayern runs until 2025 which brings up the question of why did Bayern sign him in the first place? when they had reportedly shown interest in Kasper Schmeichel who was open to joining for six months. While the future of on-loan goalkeeper Alexander Nübel continues to be up in the air.
