Liverpool in talks to appoint former Wolfsburg director of sport Jörg Schmadtke

According to the Telegraph, Liverpool are in talks to appoint former Wolfsburg director of Sport Jörg Schmadtke as their new sporting director.

Schamdtke has been managing director of sport at Wolfsburg, 1.FC Köln, Hannover 96 and sporting director at Alemannia Aachen. Schmadtke has been jobless since leaving Wolfsburg in January.

Liverpool are searching for a sporting director as Julian Ward who has held the role for just over a year will leave at the end of the season. The Athletic reports that Jürgen Klopp has played a bigger role in recruitment recently and knows Schmadtke well due to his time in Germany.

Some of the players Schmadtke has been involved in signing are Maxcene Lacroix, Micky Van de Ven and Ridle Baku during his time at Wolfsburg.

However, the 59-year-old has come with his controversies, he has previously fallen out with manager Oliver Glasner while he was in charge at Wolfsburg over signings. This ultimately led to Glasner joining Eintracht Frankfurt and going on to win the Europa League while Wolfsburg languished in the bottom half of the table and went through Mark van Bommel and Florian Kohfeldt in the same season.
