Freiburg looking for a midfielder and striker in the winter

According to Bild, Freiburg are looking for a striker and midfielder in the winter transfer window and are prepared to spend if necessary.

Freiburg aims to sign a midfielder and ideally wants one who can immediately challenge Nicolas Höfler and Maximilian Eggestein, who have been their undisputed midfield duo for the past couple of seasons. Bochum’s Patrick Osterhage is one of their desired candidates for the position.

However, if their desired candidate is only available to buy in the summer then they will move then, if not Freiburg have a plan B which is that they will bring a player in on loan until then. Freiburg have been linked with Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri on loan recently.

The other position is striker, Freiburg are ready to spend around €15m for a striker and maintain an interest in the options they had in the summer, such as Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto. The club are preparing themselves in case Leeds give the Italian the green light to leave in the winter.

When it comes to departures there are unlikely to be many this winter. Midfield Yannik Keitel is the only one who could move but it is unlikely as he is favouring staying at the club and letting his contract run down before leaving on a free in the summer. Several Bundesliga clubs are interested in the 23-year-old.
