Borussia Mönchengladbach received no offers for Marcus Thuram

Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website, Borussia Mönchengladbach Sporting Director Roland Virkus reveals that the Bundesliga club didn’t receive any offers for Marcus Thuram or Ramy Bensebaini.

“If we look at the contracts of Ramy Bensebaini and Marcus Thuram which are running out in the summer, we didn’t have any offers on the table for either player,” said Virkus. “As a result, we are pleased that both of them will be with us for the second half of the season and hopefully will be able to help us to achieve our aims with their footballing class.”

Both Thuram and Bensebaini have contracts that expire in the summer and both players had significant interest in the January transfer window. Bensebaini is expected to join Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer when his contract expires, whilst some of Europe’s biggest clubs have shown an interest in Thuram.

Gladbach would have allowed Thuram to leave in January with six months remaining on his current deal but no club made a suitable approach. As a result, the Frenchman, Daniel Farke’s top scorer this season, will leave the club in the summer with an extension extremely unlikely.

Barcelona are the latest club to show an interest in Thuram, joining Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. Clubs like Aston Villa also showed a brief interest but the 25-year-old has no interest in joining.

With 10 goals and three assists in 18 Bundesliga games, Thuram is on target to beat his best season (2019/20) in terms of goal contributions, when he finished with 18 (10 goals, eight assists) in 31 league games.
