Manuel Neuer’s Bayern Munich captaincy under threat

As reported by Sport Bild, it’s being discussed internally whether Manuel Neuer will remain captain at Bayern Munich following his statements against the club’s leadership in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung and The Athletic.

Per the report, the relationship between Julian Nagelsmann and Neuer has been difficult and the former was critical of Toni Tapalović, a close friend and goalkeeping coach to Neuer. Tapalović has since been dismissed by the club and is expected to be replaced by Michael Rechner, who worked under Nagelsmann during his time at Hoffenheim.

One potential option is that Joshua Kimmich will replace Neuer as Bayern captain. He maintains a good relationship with Nagelsmann, even so that the Bayern coach paid a visit to Austria in his free time to see Kimmich during their off time in Christmas 2021. Per Sport Bild, this closeness between the pair is well known within the team.

Kimmich would also seem the obvious successor to Neuer as Bayern’s captain.
