Borussia Dortmund to list Nico Schulz as a free transfer this summer

Borussia Dortmund are to list Nico Schulz as a free transfer this summer, Bild reports.

BVB are willing to let the defender leave on a free transfer despite being contracted until 2024. The reason being that Dortmund are desperate to get the 30-year-old off their salary list. Earning around €6m per year, Schulz is one of the higher earners at the club. Yet, the former German international hasn’t played for BVB for over a year.

Schulz arrived from TSG Hoffenheim in 2019 for a fee of €25.5m. At the time, Schulz was seen as the next long-term left-back for the club. However, the full-back never quite lived up to his potential. In almost four years, Schulz only played 61 competitive matches, scoring once and providing just three assists.

Previously, BVB attempted to source a loan move for Schulz during the winter transfer window. A deal with Roma was close with Dortmund even willing to pay his salary. However, the deal never materialised.

It now appears that Dortmund have had enough. They are willing to let the defender leave free of charge.
