Borussia Dortmund have today made their opening proposal to Ajax’s Edson Álvarez, according to Patrick Berger. The Mexican midfielder is open to joining the Bundesliga club.
This is also confirmed by Mike Verweij, who adds that Álvarez’s management will likely make a counter-proposal before reaching a verbal agreement, which may come as early as next week.
Both Álvarez and Borussia Dortmund want to make this transfer happen. The next stage would be to negotiate with Ajax’s Sven Mislintat, a former employee of Borussia Dortmund. It’s expected that Dortmund will pay around €35m to sign the Mexico international, who will sign a long-term deal.
Chelsea had a €58m bid rejected for Álvarez last summer but with just two years remaining on his contract instead of three, it’s likely that the Dutch side will receive a smaller transfer fee.
Álvarez played 44 games across all competitions for Ajax last season, and has made himself an integral player in their midfield. Since his €15m from América in 2019, the 25-year-old has played 147 games across all competitions, including 23 in the Champions League.
With the sale of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid for €103m, internally BVB expect to reinvest around two-thirds of the fee back into the squad, with Álvarez perhaps their first summer arrival for a fee.
