Borussia Dortmund expect a quiet January transfer window

It has been a rollercoaster of a season for Borussia Dortmund. While Die Schwarzgelben have fallen behind in the Bundesliga title race, they have excelled in the Champions League, becoming the first side to qualify out of the competitive Group F.

However, due to BvB’s inconsistent league form, there has been an expectation that they will look to strengthen the side in January. Nevertheless, when speaking to DAZN after their 1-1 draw with league leaders Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday afternoon, Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl confirmed that it will most likely be a quiet January transfer window for the club:

“The focus is actually on the summer, but we will wait and see how things develop in the next few weeks.”

It has been clear to see that Dortmund have been affected by the loss of Jude Bellighman to Real Madrid. In an attempt to paper over the cracks left by the Bellingham, Edin Terzić has taken a more defensive approach this season, and while it has worked in the cup competitions, it is yet to bear the fruits of its labour domestically.

As well as this, the business conducted in the summer was not enough for Dortmund to take the next step up to dethrone Bayern Munich. While Felix Nmecha and Niclas Füllkrug have been worthwhile additions to the squad, missing out on key transfer targets such as Edson Álvarez looks to have cost the club this season, at least in the Bundesliga.

While Dortmund may be quiet in the winter transfer window, it will take more than one key signing for them to challenge Der Rekordmeister once again.
