Borussia Dortmund could enter the market to sign Thomas Meunier cover

As reported by Patrick Berger of Sport1, Borussia Dortmund are exploring the transfer market to sign a replacement for Thomas Meunier, who is expected to miss around six weeks after tearing a muscle fibre in his calf.

As a result, participation in Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga game against Augsburg on Sunday is out of the question and it’s suggested that Meunier could be absent until mid-February, therefore missing the important Champions League game against Chelsea at home on February 15.

“A winter transfer of an experienced player, possibly on loan, could definitely be possible and make sense,” said Berger.

With Meunier’s injury, Niklas Süle remains the only cover for the Belgian but Edin Terzic prefers to use him in his preferred central position. Marius Wolf has also covered at right-back but is more comfortable in an offensive position whilst Morey is working his way back following a long-term knee injury.

Expect the next couple of weeks to be busy for BVB bosses with the club negotiating with Youssoufa Moukoko (18) to extend the German forward’s contract. Newcastle United have made an approach for Moukoko, who also has an offer to extend his deal in Dortmund with a significant salary increase.

Die Schwarzgelben are sixth and nine points behind leaders Bayern Munich, who play RB Leipzig on Friday, before BVB host Augsburg on Sunday afternoon.
