Bayer Leverkusen set to sign Alejandro Grimaldo on a free transfer from Benfica

Fabrizio Romano reports that Bayer Leverkusen are to complete the signing of Benfica left-back Alejandro Grimaldo when his contract expires in the summer.

A full agreement between the two is already in place with the 27-year-old set to sign a contract until 2027. Grimaldo has reportedly already completed his medical at Leverkusen and the deal is set to be announced soon.

Grimaldo has played 301 times for Benfica in his seven-year stay at the club. He joined the Portuguese side in 2016 from Barcelona’s academy for €2.10m. The 27-year-old possesses strong attacking qualities having scored seven times and assisted 15 in 52 games for Benfica this season.

The signing of the Spaniard will be a big boost to the left-hand side of the Leverkusen attack. Under Xabi Alonso, Piero Hincapié and Mitchel Bakker filled the left-wing back position. Grimaldo will not only be an upgrade on Bakker but will allow Hincapié to move back to his more natural centre-back position.
