Arsenal interested in signing Matthijs de Ligt

Arsenal are interested in signing Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, according to several sources.

The 24-year-old has struggled for game time with Bayern Munich this season having made just eleven appearances in all competitions so far.

The Dutchman is just 17 months into his five-year contract with the Bundesliga champions and cost the club £60m, meaning that a deal may be difficult to negotiate in January.

Mikel Arteta sees de Ligt as a long-term target though and Arsenal are keeping a close eye on the defender to potentially bring him to the club next summer.

de Ligt will be eager to gain plenty of playing time before the Netherlands play at Euro 2024 in the summer in Germany, so he can earn himself a place on the plane and in the starting eleven.

A loan deal with a view to buy in the summer could be preferable for both de Ligt and Arsenal but Bayern may be willing to at least keep him until the end of the season considering the limited time to bring in a replacement and the depth needed in the squad at the moment in order to win the big competitions.
