A return to Borussia Dortmund for Ilkay Gündogan isn’t ruled out

Borussia Dortmund continue to search the market for a successor to Jude Bellingham and according to Bild, a return to the club for Manchester City’s Ilkay Gündogan isn’t yet ruled out.

Gündogan’s contract expires in the summer and the Germany international is open to extending his stay at Manchester City, but the player wants a new two-year deal while Pep Guardiola has a policy of only offering one-year contracts to players over 30.

Borussia Dortmund continue to monitor the situation of German national players and although it would be a difficult task to bring Gündogan back to the club, a return remains possible.

Although Dortmund are expected to receive in excess of €120m from Real Madrid for Bellingham, the Bundesliga runners-up will still have to take a financial hit to bring Gündogan back to the Westfalenstadion.

Per Bild’s report, Gündogan receives around £18m a season at Manchester City, considerably higher than the highest salary at BVB. At 32, Dortmund would unlikely receive any future transfer fee should they sell Gündogan and so if they do re-sign their former player, it would be a huge economic risk but also a clear signal to their league rivals with a signing of Gündogan’s quality.
