Union Berlin want Philipp Max

Union Berlin are interested in signing 28-year-old left-back Philipp Max from PSV, according to Sky Germany.

Early discussions are ongoing but if a transfer doesn’t work out, Union may extend the contract of Bastian Oczipka (33).

Max joined PSV for €8m from Augsburg in 2020 and has two years remaining on his current deal, playing 92 games in all competitions and creating 18 from left-back.

The departure of Roger Schmidt to Benfica could have an impact on the German’s future. It depends on how Ruud Van Nistelrooy would plan to use the German defender. Last season, Max created just three goals in 25 league games.

Union have already made one defensive signing this summer, reaching an agreement to sign 23-year-old central-defender Danilho Doekhi from Vitesse after his contract at the Eredivisie side expired.

Urs Fischer’s side have also signed Jamie Leweling, Janik Haberer, Paul Seguin, Miloš Pantović, Tim Skarke and Lennart Grill this summer. However, they could lose last season’s top scorer, Taiwo Awoniyi, who is being courted by Nottingham Forest.
