Thomas Tuchel favourite for the England job should Gareth Southgate step down

According to Bild, Thomas Tuchel is the favourite for the England job should Gareth Southgate decide to step down. Since their narrow exit from the World Cup against France, many have been speculating whether Southgate will stay in the role despite his contract running until Euro 2024 in Germany.

Southgate has told the media that the past 18 months have been difficult at times, especially with their poor run of form in the Nations League. However, a dominant performance against France has indicated that the England national team could have a high chance of winning in the next two major tournaments. Southgate has overseen a massive exchange in talent and attitude regarding the English national team and now has one of the most exciting teams in world football.

After nearly winning the Euros and reaching a World Cup semi-final and quarter-final, the Englishman may believe now is the right time to take a step back. Should this be the case, Bild reports that Thomas Tuchel is the favourite for the job. The 49-year-old’s last job in football was with Chelsea, where he won the Champions League. Before that, Tuchel brings plenty of experience from his time at Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.
